Care Homes in Scotland

A Nursing Home is a residential building where individuals live full time, receiving accommodation and care. They are suitable for those who have been assessed as needing a higher level of care than they can get at home. The types of care provided vary but often include nursing and end of life care.

In Scotland, if you are assessed as needing care at a Care Home and you meet certain criteria your personal care and nursing costs are paid for by the council. The council will set up a contract with the home for you and your payments can start from the day you move in.

The Future of Care Homes in Scotland: Trends and Innovations

A private sector provider, HC-One, has had more complaints upheld than any other home operator in Scotland over the last three years, The Ferret can reveal. Their Riverside Care Home in Dundee, Bullumbie Court and Drumhor Care Homes are among the 33 homes operated by the firm with high numbers of upheld complaints.

Trade unions and campaign groups have blamed lower wages, poor working conditions and a focus on profits for the problems encountered by many Care Home providers. They argue that this leads to high staff turnover and low morale, resulting in sub-standard care for people in their homes. They are calling for all care workers to be paid a living wage of around PS9 per hour plus a bonus. This would give them a better chance to build good relationships with the people in their care and improve the quality of their work.
